Becoming Informed
What is a welcoming and inclusive community?
A welcoming and inclusive community promotes the full participation of all residents in the social, cultural and economic life of the region without discrimination.
Individuals in welcoming communities are:
- helpful to newcomers,
- respectful of Aboriginal land and territory,
- open to new ideas and customs, and
- recognize the contributions newcomers make.
Diversity in communities encompasses acceptance, respect and understanding uniqueness when it comes to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, status, age, abilities or beliefs. This means more than simple tolerance-it is embracing and celebrating the rich diversity of the community. The goal is to create opportunities to explore differences in a safe, positive and nurturing environment.
There are several steps in the journey to becoming a welcoming and inclusive community-the first is being informed, self-aware and connected.
